I still come back and watch this from time to time, James. You've done a real honest service to the history of this genre that serves as both inspiration and entertainment.
He would for sure be the coolest Dad/Uncle in the world
This is like the bob Ross of techno
Who in the F$#%#&^#*#^ is Bob Ross????? Ewe toobers seem obsessed with this person. I'm not going to boogle his name as I don't want to be sucked in to this cult!!!
@@spiderlab2526 Regular and down to earth dude who made nature paintings on live tv back in the 80s and 90s.
@@anrsbo1964 Thank you. Unheard of outside the US :-)
@@spiderlab2526 I'm not from the US neither, just Googled him some time ago. He was actually a pretty chill dude, I recommend his shows. There is even 24 hour livestreams on youtube with his stuff.
Bob Ross was fantastic. Not unheard of outside US at all. Im from UK and watched his programmes in the 90s. He had a calm soothing voice.... Techno ....... Lets go crazy
I love the idea of a track being becoming associated with a particular sampling excursion. Probably more memorable than loading up a VST.
This is the best series you guys have done in a long time, just amazing :)
aquamentum keep doing them guys! Id like to watch a trance one of this and maybe a trap one haha
As a primarily hardcore techno producer, this was really inspiring and gives me a lot to take back to my hardcore productions.
Level of using Ableton: God
"using different swing values on different percussion elements"
Thanks for that tip. I almost always use the same value, just cause i never thought to do otherwise.
I know !
love the workflow. More videos like this please. Very inspiring.
Could watch James do a tutorial making beans on toast! Legend! Easy to follow, calm and collected, pure inspiration. Makes things look easy. Cheers mate and cheers PB for making these free vids.
I am so glad, that I boight the Zoom H6 !
Watching this series makes me want to experiment more outside!
AMAZING value video, truly a master at this craft, it's so elegant, the way you crafted everything seemed so off individually, but when you crafted the track, oof, you literally put your own words into an entire video "house is about a feeling while techno is more about the landscape" you truly painted the landscape with all of those beautiful colors.
More James Wiltshire, please. He's so good.
you know what you're doing. what a gem of a tutorial. you don't normally find good quality tutorials like this. good work !
Holy Moly - That groove towards the end
Omg, amazing how great it sounds when he layers the 2 kicks!! Love it!
love this new series guys!!!!
Love the industrial sound!
Great balance of sound design/tweaking and moving forward / arrangement. I love how you see the big picture and the details at the same time, and make it clear to us what your thought process is :)
James Whiltshire is brilliant! Bravo!!!
Fantastic. I just want to mention one important element in techno that I think is essential to making good techno. Polyrhythms. Having different elements of the track in different time signatures makes the track more interesting and helps people to "disconnect" their brain on the dancefloor.
Good example: I Hate Models - Sorrows of the Moon
Are you sure you don't mean polymeter if there are different time signatures
I loved this tutorial I love sound designing my own sounds and this has got me ready for my next level of creation
Thank You for providing this for free ❤️❤️❤️☺️
Thanks for these posts. Really enjoyed them. Won’t ever forget those 24 hour sessions with my best mate in his studio. We didn’t know that much but we had lots of fun. Miss the speed. Don’t miss the zzzzz from the desk!
It looks so easy when he does all this things
fun fact; off camera James was break dancing in the tunnel
Behind the scenes footage coming soon 💃🏼
I hope he was using a square of lino..
kristianTV1974 obviously not judging by his polished head!
hahahaha
Creased hahaha!
i never had an interest in techno till i saw this. thanks for this!
Awesome, inspirational electronic music education. 👏👏👏
Love watching this guy work. So effortless.
That sounded so raw...
Omg, you explained it very simply! It's really easy to understand. Thank you so much! I've always wanted to learn these.
the way this guy moves around in ableton makes me feel like a snail trying to race with a ferrari
i watched it again and now i understand the craft of it. Top!
Holy shit, the finished arrangement is great! 👍 James, could you finish the track and make it available to stream?! Would love to hear an extended version from start to finish! Thank you, you made it look easy 😊. Pure talent!
Brilliant . Right up my alley Sir!!!!!
This guy doesn't have a bad video. Period.
This was probably the most inspirational and instructive video on Ableton Live I have seen so far... Thank you.
So damn good. You make great videos. Don’t ever stop please. Also if you wanted to make more on techno, I wouldn’t be mad

Thanks James that's quite some impressive landscape you have shaped. Thanks for sharing, very helpful.
We need more of this guy! Love these videos!
Amazing workflow
exactly what i was thinking the whole time i was watching this.
Love it after the breakdown!
Part 1 reminds me of this old doco I have on VHS about Detroit techno. The tape is totally stuffed thou as everyone kept watching that and Alchemy's New Years special with Underworld live.
For those that missed it, you can watch Part 1 here: ruclips.net/video/kXwA-BRoYQs/видео.html
These style guides are great! James is the man and I really like the F9 audio packs too. Thanks guys.
Thankx Talib Bahi..
Yes, we for sure ❤️ your amazing videos, Sir!
Tuplets and nested tuplets etc. can also be really cool ways of mismatching swing percentages, can have a really distinct sound when stuff locks into those patterns, but make sure it's subtle unless you're being particularly experimental or merely doing it for a little fill.
This is also a great way of getting grace notes to sound a particular way, a lot of cool stuff can be done, from smooth to jarring, and I think Techno producers will have fun with either variety. (Try nesting triplets in a 5/8 polymeter, for example, the sky is the limit)
This guy is absolutely amazing
that rimshot in the underpass sounds massive!
Super inspirational!
It really works, thank you.
Thank you man for sharing this stuff
THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING!!!!!
Thanks for sharing this James! Very cool, from the history section in the beginning and into the process; i thoroughly enjoyed it.
fantastic tutorial and work James. Thanks!
A great series... Got to see your inspirations in past works and "home made kitchen ingredients" made for your next meal... Back in the days of early Synclavier sampling the libraries were absolutely awful outside of a few orchestral tid bits thus every Synclav user was a cast away thrown on to a desert island without a map compelling a survival instinct or sorts to basically make happen what you just demonstrated! For sure the biggest weakness of any new artist is undue enthrallment of "factory" preset or "pre fabricated" libraries... Dare I utter the letters "PNC." A fun ride sir - thanks for sharing!
creating your own sounds for all electronica is by far one of the best tips and such a great example, great video (",)
Quality mate. And I know that tunnel! :)
Great couple of videos!
That was phenomenal. Thank you👍🏻
Sausage your audio , ah priceless.
THIS IS BRILLIANT!! MANY THANKS!!
Why does James always look like he's going to burst into laughter at any minute lol
Thank you for your job! Loved the way you gave the material and explained the stuff. You've really helped me to get off that creative stagnation I've been suffering from!)
This was amazing to watch
hi James, thanks so much for your Techno- and House-tutorial series. Great stuff, very inspiring : )
Thats a super great series !!!!!
Amazing I did it You made my day Thank you!!
Absolutely brilliant!
complete. So I put a few videos up to show what i've got so far, and i'm hoping that soone will take the ti to watch them, let
sounds good. i like that prophet...
Yes you nailed it, that´s Techno, of course the similar techniques, coming in from another mind should sound compeletly diferent, but the key is to think Techno (to not to loose the style type of sounds) try to have a transcendental subject for your song, when doing sound desing or when preparing the track, it´s pretty much like painting. keep a global idea and imagine how the sound for the track should be, Keeping the title in mind as an objectif is the starting point to me, Sorry for my bad English
So awesome to watch. I want to get out my MS 20 right now. But with out any studio space I can't. Thanks for this great video but no thanks for the frustration James 😣😎
Some masterful work right there, bas
That was incredible!
great video, love the history and your approach to finding some inspiration.
Just awesome 🙏
Loved the history and the Journey, too the end result
Good work sir 🤙🏻
thanks for the help it help my every thing i need to install
I used to have that exact same JVC boom box. It was awesome!
All working, thanks
This is fantastic! Thanks for making this.
It gets too busy in the version at the end, but until about 2/3rds of the way through, it sounds like something off Basic Channel circa 1997/8. Great stuff!
brillant tutorial mate , was the start of a decent track very detroit sounding
Really clearly explained thank you James
Love the sample work you did, I need to try more things like that.
Awesome. Thanks. Very clear. Would love more.
That Zoom recorder must have a pretty wide, omni directional pattern. I'm surprised it caught so much of the natural reverb that close to the boombox. Either way, very cool stuff. I love thinking outside of the box/make do with what you've got type music making techniques.
Fantastic series!
Wicked demo, thanks!
This is just amazing.
James, great vid! Gave me a bunch of ideas!!
In a word,
Inspiring!
Thanks
